Theme:Depressive Disorder and Caring Partners
Speakers:Jiazhen NI (TW), NG Wing Ki (HK)

The Taiwan lesbian cult novel Journal of a Crocodile reminds us of the close relationship between lesbians and depressive disorder. Perhaps the social environment is too hostile and terrible, or this may be a way of seeing one’s own unique difference in survival.

Yet, very little attention is paid to how the caring partner of the melancholic deals with this unintelligible and difficult situation. There is never enough love, and caring never seems to find the right outlet. Both the caring partner and the loved depressive confront the same extreme situation. Let us come together to discuss, when depressive disorder happens, can you stay or do you run away ?

Date:Aug 6, Sat
Time:4:00-5:30pm
Theme:Expressing Lesbian Love
Speakers:YAU Ching (HK)、Kazuyo OISHI (JP)、iri (JP)

Will even friendship be impossible? Will I be regarded as a freak and pushed away? Will my lesbian identity be revealed at school, at work, so that I can’t survive, to the extent where even my family is aware of my identity? When did we begin to worry about the awful consequences of speaking our love? But how could love happen without telling the loved one?

Date:Aug 6, Sat
Time:7:00-8:30pm
Theme:Same Sex Attracts/ Ecstasy: White Paper on Lesbian Sex
Speakers:HO Chuen-juei JosephineCHANG Mo-Lan、Lesbian Writers.

Flirtation needs learning, making love requires communication. In a liberal society, sex is imaginative and open to discussion. But when we look at the published materials around us, erotica that arises from and responds to women’s needs are rare, not to mention materials describing or exploring lesbian sex. Luckily, some of us have been working at expanding lesbian erotica by making films and writing. Let’s all become artists, writers, filmmakers, and together create a beautiful new world filled with desires.

Date:Aug 7, Sun
Time:2:00-3:30pm
Theme:Religion and LGBTQ: I am not lost, I have not erred
Speakers: DING Naifei(TW)、Ilil ALEXANDER(IL)
Religion is often the cause of discrimination against LGBTQ, and thus becomes the source of religious LGBTQ’s inner conflict and pain. Some religious leaders will quote from religious texts, such as the Koran, Bible, or cite Chinese Yin-Yang beliefs in order to deny or negate homosexuality. This is a great source of pressure for LGBTQ, and sometimes will even force LGBTQ to choose between sexual identity and religious beliefs. Yet, in every religion there are an increasing number of warriors who, notwithstanding the great pressure within religious communities, are challenging religious exegeses that discriminate against LGBTQ. A revolution on orthodox religious thought and beliefs is in the making.

Date:Aug 7, Sun
Time:4:00-5:30pm
Theme:Lesbian Migrant Workers: Lesbian Love Amidst Taiwan’s Migrant Workers
Speakers: WANG Ping(TW)、WU Jing Ru(TW)、Lesbian Migrant Workers (PH)

* T-P Factory (Sponsored By: Taiwan International Workers' Association)

Migrant workers make up a large proportion of Taiwan’s labor force, and especially in the manufacturing and domestic worker/caretaker sectors, women migrant workers are the in the majority. Amongst the many women migrant workers who have come to Taiwan from the Philippines, we find not a few lesbian partners who have come together. Some of these luckily have ended up working in the same factory; others can only work far apart, and arrange to meet on the rare holiday. Through Taiwan’s filmmakers, we are able to see how these lesbian migrant workers struggle for their survival, their lives and their future.

Date:Aug 7, Sun
Time:7:00-8:30pm
Theme: Chinese Families and Societies: “I won’t ask… so you shouldn’t tell”
Speakers: WANG Ping(TW)、Filmmakers (TW、HK、CN)

The common attitude of Chinese (or sino-centric) societies toward homosexuality is to ignore it (pretend not to see anything different), or to deal with it by paternalist reticence. Be it in families, at school, or in society, we do not seem to feel severe or violent repressive measures, and there are no laws criminalizing homosexuality. Yet, this kind of “I won’t ask, you keep silent” regime, with pervasive “non-recognition, non-repression, and all around pretense as if nothing different could exist or happen,” is a gentle form of oppression and repression. As a result, LGBTQ who struggle for recognition, respect and equality are as if mired in quicksand; they cannot clearly see the obstructive forces, but advance and movement seem incredibly difficult. We hope that through a dialogue between and amongst Taiwan, Hong Kong and China, we will be able to ignite more effective means and strategies for LGBTQ movements.

Lesbian filmmakers from Asia will share their experiences in making and producing lesbian films. This will not only enhance our experience of the Film Festival but will also help us further reflect upon the multi-layered meanings and power of these films and videos.Intimate discussions with filmmakers will enable us to delve deeper into the issues broached by the films.
